With one in five Louisville children living in poverty, the KentuckyOne Health Partners care management team found a unique way to support the physical and mental health of local kids, many of our own patients – beds!
Linda McAdams, RN Health Coach, learned about the relatively new mission, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, this past summer.
“My husband and I volunteered at the 8th Street Mission over the summer, and there met Steve Lewis, Chapter President for the New Albany group,” said McAdams. “We were so impressed by the group’s work and loved their simple purpose – ‘no kid sleeps on the floor in our town!’”
The 8th Street Mission is a coalition of mission organizations in New Albany, including Sleep in Heavenly Peace – a national organization with 118 chapters in 39 states across the U.S. The New Albany chapter is one of three in the Louisville area, including the Derby City and West Louisville chapters.
The need to provide beds for at risk children continues to grow for a variety of reasons. Lewis shared stories of working parents who struggle to make ends meet and grandparents caring for grandchildren without resources. Regardless of the reason, children who sleep on the floor have greater incidence of sleep deprivation, hunger and crime. The New Albany chapter has delivered 45 beds this year with a goal of delivering 50 by year end.
McAdams learned that the group doesn’t build the bunk beds until they get bedding. After sharing her experience with co-workers, the Louisville KHP care management team decided to collect and donate comforter and sheet sets. Thanks to the KHP team, the chapter has bedding to surpass their 2018 goal and get off to a great start in 2019.
According to their website, Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a charity started with the build of one bed for a single family. With leftover wood from the first bunk, they built another. A Facebook post turned into local people eager to help and volunteer. Few organizations offer suitable beds and bedding to kids in need and Sleep in Heavenly Peace wants to help fill that gap. If a child needs a bed, they want to make sure they get one.
